Nazareth tops Buffalo State, 4-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Nazareth College Golden Flyers defeated The Buffalo State Bengals 4-2 Tuesday afternoon in a nonconference men's soccer game at Golden Flyer Stadium. The win lifts the Golden Flyers to 7-8 overall and drops the Bengals to 1-16-1 overall.

Nazareth seniors Shane Mead Vinnie Rubert and Anthony Cervione were celebrated and recognized today as they played their final home game in Golden Flyer Stadium.

Play in the first half was physical from both sides, but was controlled by Nazareth. The first goal of the game came from junior Luke Elston in the 10th minute of play. Elston's ninth goal of the season came from the foot of junior James Wheeler who sent a lofted ball into the penalty box off a corner kick. The Golden Flyers continued to dominate play with a shot advantage of 9-4. It was not until the 26th minute of play that Buffalo was able to answer back with a goal from C.J. Scirto after Nazareth lost possession of the ball in their defensive end.

The action packed second half began with a goal from senior Jimmy Gaffney in the 54th minute after senior Mead crossed the ball into the box. Gaffney one-timed the ball into the inside of the near post for his second goal of the season. Nazareth scored their third goal of the game minutes later as junior Simon Mounsdon collected the ball from a poor defensive clear and floated the ball past Buffalo goalkeeper Ian Huntoon from 30 yards out. The goal was Mounsdon's second goal of the season. Nazareth's fourth goal of the game came from junior Ryan Foley after he dribbled past two defenders and slid the ball past the goalkeeper. Foley's fourth goal of the season came in the 65th minute of play. Buffalo finally answered back in the 72nd minute after Andrew Dugan capitalized on a loose ball in front of the net.

Nazareth's goalkeeper #J.P. Horan# completed the game with a total of six saves for the Golden Flyers.

The Golden Flyers take flight in their season finale Saturday night against the Alfred University Saxons, at Alfred.
