ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth earned its second men's soccer win of the season Sunday as the Golden Flyers used a late goal from sophomore James Wheeler to edge Brockport 2-1 in the eighth annual Doug May Classic at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Nazareth is 2-0 this season after defeating SUNY Canton on Saturday. Brockport is 1-1.
Nazareth was outshot 6-1 in Sunday's second 10-minute overtime period, but the one shot came from Wheeler, who took a pass from sophomore Simon Mounsdon and slipped it into the Brockport net with just 10 seconds left to end a long game that featured two weather-related delays.
Junior Luke Elston scored late in the second half giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead, but Brockport was able to tie the game on a penalty kick in with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
Much of the first half was played evenly between the two teams, with neither side able to manage many dangerous attempts and at halftime the score remained tied.
In the 77th minute, Nazareth finally broke through when Elston scored his third goal of the young season. After a Nazareth corner kick there was a battle for possession in the Brockport penalty area. Sean Dorman won possession for the Flyers, and he was able to find Elston, picking up his first assist of the year.
Brockport earned a late penalty kick after a hard Nazareth tackle in the penalty area. Brian Duffy took and converted the penalty to level the score with just 1:52 to play in regulation.
With just over 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime period Nazareth's James Wheeler broke free into space and left the ball off to Simon Mounsdun. Mounsdon then played a beautiful return pass to Wheeler off the give and go and the sopohmore was able to bury a last second goal to send Nazareth to victory.
Senior Kyle Connolly went the distance in goal for Nazareth and was credited with four saves. Kyle Sauln made six saves for Brockport.
The game was scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. but was delayed 20 minutes by a lightning strike. The game was stopped again and delayed for 30 minutes with 26:21 left in the second half following a second strike.
Nazareth is off until next Saturday when the Golden Flyers visit Oswego for a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
