Rochester, N.Y. -- Nazareth (1-0-0) outscored SUNY Canton (0-2-0) by a final score of 4-1 in the opener of the Eighth Annual Doug May Classic hosted by Nazareth. The Golden Flyers were lead by sophomores Luke Elston and Ryan Foley. Elston scored two goals in the game, while Foley was able to contribute a goal and assist for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers struck first in the 11th minute when Liam Connolly found Elston along the left wing. Elston was able to break free from two Kangaroo defenders in the box and slide a low shot past Sankung Sillah and into the right corner giving Nazareth an early 1-0 lead.
Canton answered back in the 27rd minute when freshman Erik Whitcombe broke through Nazareth's backline and was able to put a shot past a helpless Connolly in net. Francesco Cardilo was given an assist on the play.
In the 33rd minute Nazareth's James Wheeler beat a Kangaroo defender along the left endline and was able to cut the ball back finding a wide open Ryan Foley in the box. Foley was easily able to put the ball past Homero Flores and Nazareth pushed back in front by a score of 2-1. Flores has replaced an injured Sillah in goal for Canton.
In the 54th minute Canton's Whitcombe threatened to tie the game with his second goal of the day but Connelly was able to meet his rising shot at the upper right corner for the save.
In the 62nd minute Elston scored his second goal of the afternoon for Nazareth. After a Ryan Foley cross, Elston found himself open in front of net and was able to send the ball over the head of the Canton keeper and into the net as it ricocheted off the cross bar.
The Flyers added a fourth goal in the 79th minute when sophomore Mama Amar scored his first goal of the season. Tommy Rocco was credited with an assist on the play.
Nazareth outshot Canton 22-9 in the game. Nazareth's Connolly only need to make three saves on the day, while the two Canton goalies combined for five saves on the day.
The Golden Flyers will play again on Sunay when the face SUNY Brockport at 4:30 p.m. in the second day of the Doug May Classic.
