ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host RIT used a pair of strong pitching performances Sunday to post a pair of softball shutout wins against Nazareth at RIT Field. The Tigers won by scores of 4-0 and 6-0.
Nazareth completed its 2011 season with a 5-29 overall record, including a 1-13 mark in the Empire 8 Conference. RIT will compete in next weekend's E8 Tournament with a 21-10 overall record and an 11-3 mark in conference play.
Nazareth had seven hits in the first game, but couldn't push any runs across the plate against RIT starter Carlissa Cole, who didn't walk a batter and had three strikeouts. Cole also went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored a run. Michelle Tabisz added a two-run homer to pace the Tigers' offense.
Junior
Brittany Patenaude had two hits for Nazareth. The Golden Flyers' best scoring chance came in the fourth inning following a one-out double by freshman
Sarah Cipperly.
Casey Mathers followed with a single to centerfield, but Cipperly was thrown out at home as the throw from RIT's Shannon McCormick was relayed home by shortstop Tori Nadow.
In the second game, Nazareth's offense was stymied by the two-hit pitching of RIT's Brittany Kemp, who walked just one and struck out 12.
Freshman
Claire Campbell led off the game for Nazareth with a single, but was caught stealing. Patenaude had Nazareth's other hit, a lead-off single in the second, but she was left stranded at second base. Kemp then shut down the Golden Flyers the rest of the way, retiring that last 16 batters in order.
Nadow had two hits for the Tigers and Cole added a two-run double in the first inning.
