Nazareth splits pair in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Nazareth split a pair of softball games Thursday as the Golden Flyers' Spring Break trip nears its conclusion. The Golden Flyers used a three-run first inning to defeat Wisconsin-River Falls in the first game, 4-2. Nazareth then was roughed up by Millikin in the second game, 11-2.

Nazareth, now 2-6 overall, plays two more games Friday before returning home. The Golden Flyers play Montlcair State at 9 a.m.and Hood College at 1 p.m.

In the first game, Nazareth got seven hits and rode the 10-strikeout pitching of junior Kelly Kocher to their its second win of the week.

Nazareth scored three times in the first inning with the help of two hits and two errors. Freshman Kasey Pollot and sophomore Kaitlin Graham each reached base on singles with three runs scoring on two errors.

After Wisconsin-River Falls closed to within 3-2 with runs in the second and fourth innings, Nazareth added an insurance run in the seventh as Graham singled home Jen Durso, who led off the inning with a walk.

Kocher's efforts were aided by a 6-4-3 double play in the bottom of the seventh with shorstop Liz Toner tossing to second baseman Kailey Ritch, who relayed to Sarah Cipperly for the key double play.

In the second game, Nazareth surrendered all 11 runs on nine hits in the first two innings as Millikin won a five-inning game. Nazareth tried to stay in it by scoring twice in the fifth inning on four hits, but it was too little too late. Freshman Meg DeMario drove home both runs with a single.
