ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored twice in each half of Saturday's Empire 8 Conference men's soccer match against Alfred as the Golden Flyers took a 4-1 victory over the Saxons at Golden Flyer Stadium.
As winners in three of their last four matches, the Golden Flyers improved to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the Empire 8 Conference. Alfred is 5-7-2 overall and 0-4 in conference games.
In miserable weather conditions that featured high wind gusts and steady rainfall, Nazareth benefitted from firest-half goals by juniors
Shane Mead and
Scott Duarte to forge ahead. Mead's goal, his second of the season, came at the six-minute mark as he one-timed a pass from
Simon Mounsdon.
After Alfred's Frankie Mannino tied the score with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute, Duarte delivered the game-winner in the 21st minute as he directed a cross from
Ryan Foley for his first goal of the season.
In the second half, Nazareth extended the lead with goals by
Jimmy Gaffney and Mounsdon. Gaffney's goal was started by a
Sean Dorman corner kick. An Alfred defender tried to clear the ball out of the penalty area, but Gaffney settled the clear and blasted a shot through a maze of players.
Foley was credited with his team-best fourth assist on Mounsdon's goal in the 75th minute. Foley crossed the ball from the right wing and Mounsdon finished for his second goal of the season.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (23-9) and corner kicks (15-2). Senior
Kyle Connolly had three saves for Nazareth; Elliot Thorpe had eight saves for the Saxons.
Nazareth hits the road Tuesday for a non-conference game at Buffalo State at 4 p.m. The Golden Flyers are back home Saturday for a key conference matchup with Ithaca at 3 p.m.
