ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth split a pair of matches again Saturday during the second day of the Purple and Gold Invitational at the Kidera Gymnasium. After falling to eighth-ranked Heidelberg in a three-set match in the morning, Nazareth came back in the afternoon to sweep Geneseo in three sets to finish the tournament at 2-2.
The Golden Flyers lost to Heidelberg by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 25-13. They defeated Geneseo 26-24, 25-16, 25-20. The Golden Flyers are 13-9 overall and return to action Wednesday at home against Rochester at 7 p.m. Heidelberg went 4-0 to win the tournament and stands at 18-2 overall. Geneseo fell 11-12 overall after an 0-4 weekend.
Juniors
Aubrey Cooke and
Amy Johnson represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team. Cooke amassed 35 assists to go with eight digs against Geneseo, while Johnson pounded out 10 kills with just two hitting errors in 23 attempts for a .348 hitting percentage. Freshman
Maria Allocco led all hitters with 13 kills, while junior
Brittany Crocetti contributed 12 digs. Kat Strickland had 10 kills for Geneseo and Noelle Morrison had 19 assists.
In the Heidelberg match, the 'Berg used a tidy .367 hitting percentage toward an efficient result. The 'Berg had 43 kills overall against just seven hitting errors. Venessa Haase led the way with 10 kills in 17 attempts for a .529 percentage. Jacki Street added nine kills in 21 swings for a .381 percentage. Setters Rachel Ferguson (19) and Alexa Frank (12) combined for 31 assists.
For Nazareth,Johnson and freshman
Chelsea Beecher each had six kills and Cooke had 19 assists. In contrast to Heidelberg, Nazareth had 21 hitting errors for an overall percentage of .041.
