ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Stevens held Nazareth to 18-74 (24 percent) shooting from the field to defeat the Golden Flyers 60-52 in a men's Empire 8 basketball game Saturday afternoon. Junior
Jason Corletta finished as Nazareth's leading scorer with 20 points, including six three-pointers.
With the loss, the Golden Flyers fall to 7-5 overall and 0-3 in Empire 8 games. The Ducks improve to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference with the victory.
Nazareth closed the first half with 10-0 scoring run to cut its deficit to 28-24 at the break. Stevens opened the half with back-to-back baskets to extend its lead to 32-24 3:36 into the second period. Following a technical foul, Corletta connected on two free throws to cut the Ducks' lead to three points, 34-31, with 11:49 to play in regulation.
Stevens stretched its lead to 50-37 following a 16-6 scoring run over the next five minutes to pull ahead for good. The Golden Flyers made three three-point baskets in the final 43 seconds to cut the final score to 60-52.
When sophomore
Tyshun Stephens connected on his three-point attempt with 36 seconds remaining, Nazareth came within five points, 54-49. The Ducks converted on all eight of their free throws in the final 37 seconds to secure the victory.
In addition to the points from Corletta, junior
Phil Scaffidi finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Junior
Jake Fladd tallied a team-high eight rebounds.
Simon Smith had a team-high 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Bryan Franklin and Russ Thompson finished with 15 points and 10 points, respectively, for Stevens. The Ducks finished with a 50-43 advantage in rebounds.
The Golden Flyers continue their homestand with a conference game against RIT Tuesday evening at 8 p.m.
