Messiah outlasts Nazareth in ot, 2-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visting Messiah scored the game-winning goal with just 1:55 left in the second overtime period Saturday as the 17th-ranked Falcons rallied for a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Nazareth at Golden Flyer Stadium.

Messiah, a perennial power in Division III soccer as winners of seven of the last 10 national titles, improved to 3-1 overall. Nazareth dropped to 1-2-1 overall.

Messiah's Nick Thompson scored the game-winning goal at the end of the Falcons' 24th corner kick of the match. Kent Ramirez took the kick and Thompson's header bounced over the goal line for the winning score in the 109th minute.

The Golden Flyers were thinking upset after taking a 1-0 advantage with just :40 left in the first half. A corner kick by freshman James Wheeler resulted in a scramble in front of the Messiah goal. Nazareth's Chris Mitchell got the final foot on it as it deflected off a Messiah defender and into the goal.

Messiah's tying goal came in the 79th minute after senior Geoff Pezon beat Nazareth keeper Kyle Connolly to a loose ball near the end line and crossed a pass to junior Trevor Lee, who one-touched a shot into an unattended goal.

Messiah dominated time of possession as evidenced by a 24-3 advantage in corner kicks. Shots were 16-12 in the Falcons' favor. Connolly had eight saves for the Golden Flyers and Kyle Fulks made four saves for Messiah.

Nazareth is home again Tuesday to play Fredonia in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
