ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior
Ann Schoff slugged a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday to lift host Nazareth to a 2-1 victory over Brockport in the second game of a softball doubleheader. Brockport won the first game 8-0.
Brockport is now 12-2 overall following the split of the non-conference games. Nazareth is 5-7 overall.
Schoff's hit sailed over the left-center field fence and ended the game in which Nazareth had seven hits to Brockport's three. Sophomore pitcher
Kelly Kocher pitched all seven innings for the win for the Golden Flyers. She walked four and struck out 12.
Nazareth took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning by stringing together singles by
Brittany Patenaude,
Mandy Weakley and
Katie Valerio. Brockport tied the score in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Ona Halladay.
The score stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh. Valerio grounded out to open the inning, then Schoff took two strikes before unloading her game-winning homer. Kelly Briscoe pitched well for Brockport, allowing just seven hits and striking out four in taking the loss.
In the first game, Brockport pounded out 14 hits against Nazareth starter
Casey Mathers, who took the loss. Brockport scored once in the second inning and five times in the third, one on a solo home run by Jenna Yates and three more on a three-run shot by Melissa Boyle.
Stephanie Geer pitched a complete game shutout for the Golden Eagles with no walks and seven strikeouts. Mathers and Weakley each had two hits for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth opens its Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday with a doubleheader at Alfred starting at 1 p.m.
