ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Freshman
Luke Elston scored two goals for host Nazareth Tuesday as the Golden Flyers inched past the .500 mark for the first time this season in men's soccer with a 4-1 victory over Buffalo State.
The non-conference victory boosted Nazareth's overall record to 7-6-2, while Buffalo State slipped to 3-11. The Golden Flyers, winners of four games in a row, have a pair of key Empire 8 Conference games remaining on their schedule. They visit Elmira Saturday at 1 p.m. and host RIT Oct. 30 at 12 p.m.
Elston scored his second and third goals of the season just over a minute apart in the second half to break open a close game that Nazareth led 1-0 at halftime. Elston's first goal, in the 61st minute, came off a cross from the right wing off the foot of
Rikesh Lad.
Elston's second goal came off a rebound of his own shot. Buffalo State keeper Tim Clark made the initial save, but Elston knocked in the rebound for an unassisted score to make it 3-0.
After Buffalo State got on the scoreboard in the 81st minute on a goal by Kirk Love, Nazareth answered about five minutes later as junior
Andrew Alaimo scored on a 20-yard blast from the right wing with junior
Chris Eccles gaining an assist.
Nazareth got its first goal in the 26th minute when freshman
Ryan Foley delivered his eighth goal of the season as he headed in a right-side cross from
James Wheeler, who gained his team-high seventh assist.
Nazareth outshot the visitors 12-0 in the first half and 27-4 overall. Nazareth goalie
Kyle Connolly was called upon to make just two saves.
