Nazareth defeats Alfred, 80-64

Five players score double-digits for Golden Flyers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Alfred, 80-64 in a men's Empire 8 Conference basketball game Tuesday evening. Five players finished in double-digits, led by senior Jeff DeHimer, who tallied 14 points. Junior Corey McAdam finished with a triple-double as he recorded 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.

With the victory, Nazareth improves to 5-11 overall and 2-5 in Empire 8 games. Alfred drops to 7-10 overall and 2-6 in conference games.

Alfred held a brief 14-10 lead in the first half before Nazareth went on a 17-2 scoring run to claim a 26-16 lead midway through the first half. A three-pointer by senior Ryan McAdam ignited the Golden Flyers run and was followed by free throws from senior Chris Barrett and baskets from freshmen Jake Fladd, Jason Corletta, and Phil Scaffidi.

The Saxons cut Nazareth's lead to one-point, 33-32, with just under five minutes remaining in the half, but the Golden Flyers prevented Alfred from taking the lead. Nazareth finished the half with a 12-5 scoring run to take a 45-37 lead at halftime.

The Golden Flyers took a double-digit lead early in the second half and the Saxons were unable to ever cut the Nazareth lead to under 11 points. Nazareth's largest lead of the game came with 4:55 left in the game following a layup from Corey McAdam.

In addition to DeHimer's and Corey McAdam's points, Corletta also added 13 points. Ryan McAdam and Barrett each finished with 11 points. Barrett's 11 points was a career-high. Scaffidi, Fladd, freshman Jordan Major, and senior Joe Mihalich also scored points in Nazareth's balanced attack.  Ryan McAdam added nine rebounds for the Golden Flyers, who outrebounded the Saxons 41-31.

Alfred was led by Jared Patt, who tallied a game-high 21 points and team-high eight rebounds. Gary Kwicien and Carl Embury also scored in double-digits with 16 points and 11 points respectively.

Nazareth plays its next three games on the road against Empire 8 rivals Stevens (January 30th), Hartwick (February 1st), and Elmira (February 3rd). The Golden Flyers return home to take on St. John Fisher February 7th.
