Nazareth clinches top seed in E8 Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y. –Freshman Michelle Cook had the game winning goal to record her fifth goal of the game. Nazareth improves to 9-2 and 7-0 in the Empire 8 with the 7-6 victory over visiting 15th-ranked Stevens Tech in an Empire 8 women's lacrosse game. The Ducks drop to 9-2 overall and 4-2 in conference games.

With the victory, the Golden Flyers clinch the regular season title and the top seed for the upcoming Empire 8 Tournament. As the top seed, Nazareth will host the tournament April 26th and 27th.

Stevens started the game early with a goal from Leah Wasserman 32 seconds into the game. Freshman Michelle Cook tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted goal about four minutes later. Both teams traded goals consistently as Nazareth's Katie Schneeberger and Alyssia Roberts also scored.

It wasn't long before Steven's took the lead in the middle of the second half with two consecutive goals from Alyssa Pigott to bring the Ducks to a one goal lead. Cook answered back for Nazareth as she recorded two goals of her own bringing Naz to a 6-5 lead with 2:38 left in the game. The Ducks' Alyssa Pigott connected on a free position shot to tie the game with 57 seconds left on the clock.

In the first and second overtime sessions neither Nazareth nor Stevens scored a goal. Cook tallied the Golden Flyers game-winning goal just 11 seconds in the third overtime session.

The Golden Flyers outshot the Stevens 25-17 and had a 15-11 advantage in ground balls.

Nazareth travels to Geneva to play 13th-ranked William Smith in a non-conference game Tuesday at 5 p.m.
