Nazareth defeats Rochester, 11-5

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore Nora Davis tallied four goals and one assist to lead the visiting Golden Flyers to an 11-6 non-conference victory over the University of Rochester. The game between Nazareth and Rochester was originally scheduled for March 7th, but was postponed due to snow.

With the victory, the 20th-ranked Golden Flyers improve to 2-1 overall. The Yellowjackets drop to 0-2 after the loss.

Nazareth took a quick 2-0 lead in the first 5:56 of the game following unassisted goals from sophomore Jennifer Young and freshman Michelle Cook. Allyson Hogan answered for Rochester with an unassisted goal to cut the Yellowjackets' deficit to 2-1 with 18:47 left in the first half. The Golden Flyers reclaimed their two goal lead about a minute later when Davis scored her first goal of the game to put Nazareth ahead 3-1.

Cook extended the Golden Flyers' lead to 4-1 after connecting on a free position shot with 11:44 to play in the first half. Lindsay Dakin responded for Rochester with a free position goal with just under five minutes remaining in the half, but Davis tallied her second goal with 1:13 left in the half to give Nazareth a 5-2 halftime lead. Similar to Cook's second goal, Davis's second goal also came from a free position opportunity.

Nazareth freshman Alyssa Mulheron opened scoring quickly in the second half as she scored just 32 seconds in. Young stretched the Golden Flyers' lead to 7-2 after tallying her second goal of the game with 23:33 to play. Danielle Mondro and Andrea DeFilippo tightened the game by scoring consecutive goals for Rochester in a two-minute span to cut its deficit to 7-4.

Senior Caity Richardson converted a pass from Davis to give Nazareth an 8-4 lead with 16:44 remaining. Hogan scored her second goal for the Yellowjackets, with 14:53 left in the game, to tighten the game again to three goals. Freshman Annalee Murphy scored 30 seconds later to return the Golden Flyers to their four-goal lead. Davis added two goals in the final 10 minutes to secure Nazareth's victory.

Sophomore Maria Fusco made 14 saves in goal for the Golden Flyers while Leslie Dube stopped five shots for Rochester.

Nazareth held an advantage in ground balls (15-9) and turnovers (19-12), however the Yellowjackets won 12 of the 18 draw controls and had a 23-21 edge in total shots.

The Golden Flyers play at RPI in a non-conference game Saturday in their next contest.
