ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored the game's first five goals Friday and the Golden Flyers went on to defeat St. Lawrence in a non-conference game for women's lacrosse, 12-9. The game was the season opener for both schools.

Nazareth came into the game ranked 18th nationally in Division III. The Golden Flyers got three goals and one assist from senior midfielder Caity Richardson (Pittsford Mendon HS/Pittsford, NY) and three goals from sophomore midfielder Jennifer Young (Marcellus HS/Marcellus, NY).

Five different players scored for Nazareth in the first 15 minutes as the Golden Flyers built a 5-0 lead. Richardson scored the first goal just 15 seconds into the game and Young added the second goal in the opening minute. Freshman Michelle Cook (Waterloo HS/Waterloo, NY) added her first career goal to make it 3-0. Sophomore Nora Davis (Bishop Ludden HS/Syracuse, NY) and junior Shannon Lattimore (Auburn HS/Auburn, NY) each scored to make it 5-0.

St. Lawrence rallied on goals by Kelsey Redpath (Norwich, VT), Lexi Wisnowski (Middlebury Union/Middlebury, VT), Kim Morse (Peaks Island, ME) and Katrina Knickerbocker (Clinton Corners, NY) to trim the lead to 5-4. Young halted SLU's scoring string with her second score of the game just before halftime off an assist from Richardson.

In the second half, Nazareth rattled off the first three goals as Davis, Richardson and senior Sara Spillane (CBA/Liverpool, NY) each connected to stretch the Nazareth lead to 9-4.

Liz Skinner (Liverpool HS/Liverpool, NY) and Kaitlyn Fahsel (South Jefferson HS/Watertown, NY) scored for the Saints to make it 9-6, before Nazareth pulled away again on goals by freshman Kara Kulba (Liverpool HS/Liverpool, NY) and Young. Lattimore had both assists.

Three straight St. Lawrence goals -- by Morse, Walters and Mary Jane Sweetland (Hopewell, NJ) -- sliced Nazareth's lead to 11-9 with :58 left. But Richardson preserved the win by scoring her third goal of the game with :42 left.

Nazareth, which played all 26 of its players, enjoyed a 30-17 advantage in shots. Nazareth goalie Maria Fusco (IHC/Watertown, BY) made six saves, while Anna Marchand (Middlesex HS/Concord, MA) had 11 saves for the Saints.
