ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Rochester outscored Nazareth 48-36 in the second half Tuesday to pull away for a 91-74 men's basketball victory in a non-conference game at the Alexander Palestra.
The Yellowjackets improved to 2-1 overall while the Golden Flyers dropped to 0-3.
The game was close throughout the first half with UR settling for a five-point advantage, 43-38, after 20 minutes. In the first eight minutes of the second half, UR outscored Nazareth 20-15 to expand the lead to double digits, 63-53. UR's Mike Chmielowiec hit a three-pointer to cap the run.
Chmielowiec finished with a game-high 25 points, which included 5-for-9 shooting from three-point range. He got scoring help from sophomore Marcus Roberson (16 points) and three others who reached double figures -- freshman Nate Novosel (13), sophomore Mike Labanowski (12) and sophomore Bill Serle (11).
Nazareth led for much of the first half, including 36-35 on a three-pointer by
Dominique Kendrick with 2:31 left. UR's Matt Murphy hit a short jumper 30 seconds later and the Yellowjackets never trailed thereafter.
Freshman
Jordan Major finished with a career-high 19 points with three three-pointers. Kendrick and junior
Corey McAdam each scored 11. McAdam also had nine assists.
The Yellowjackets shot 54.7 percent for the game (35-for-64), including 56.7 percent (17-for-30) in the second half. Nazareth, meanwhile, shot 28-for-65 (43 percent), including 9-for-31 from three-point range.
The Golden Flyers are off until Dec. 6 when they host RIT in an Empire 8 Conference game at 4 p.m.
