ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca's Amy Scheffer scored the game-winning goal on a direct kick with less than three minutes to play in the second overtime period Saturday to lift the host Bombers to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Nazareth.

Scheffer's goal completed a competitive battle between the Empire 8's last two undefeated teams. Ithaca, ranked 13th nationally in the latest poll conducted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, improved to 11-1-2 overall and 7-0 in the Empire 8. Nazareth is 9-6-1 overall and 5-1 in conference games.

The Golden Flyers have two regular-season games left -- Wednesday at RIT at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday at home against Utica at 12 p.m.

Scheffer's goal was her 10th of the season and came off a free kick from just outside the penalty area and over the outstretched hands of Nazareth goalie Hillary Simon, who finished with 11 saves. Ithaca had a 24-3 edge in shots, including a 7-0 advantage in the overtime periods.

Ithaca led 1-0 at halftime on the strength of an unassisted goalie by Winnie Adrien in the 31st minute. Nazareth tied the score in the 61st minute on the eighth goal of the season by senior Kelly Finn. Freshman Kaylee Benz assisted.

Ithaca's victory was its 40th straight regular-season conference win and clinches for the Bombers the top seed for the Empire 8 Conference Tournament Nov. 8-9. The top four regular-season finishers qualify to compete. The Golden Flyers have clinched a berth.
