Leon Hill scored a career-high 18 points for Nazareth Friday as the host Golden Flyers extended their men's basketball winning streak to six games with an 89-73 victory over Alfred at the Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth improved to 8-1 overall and remained unbeaten at 3-0 in the Empire 8. Alfred is 1-10 overall and 0-3 in conference games. Nazareth hosts Stevens Saturday at 4 p.m. Stevens suffered its first loss of the season Friday at RIT, 91-85. Saturday's game will be available on local radio station WHTK-AM (1280) and via webcast at http://www.empire8.tv/. The loss by Stevens gives Nazareth sole possession of first place in the E8 as the league's only remaining unbeaten team.
Against the Saxons, the Golden Flyers zoomed to a 10-point lead in the first five minutes, 16-6, as Hill contributed seven points in the early run. Alfred closed to within three, 20-17, on a bucket by Ron Smith with 11:15 left in the first half, but another scoring run left Nazareth on top, 46-31, at halftime.
Nazareth's lead grew as large as 24 points in the second half as the Golden Flyers were able to substitute freely. Hill made 8 of 9 shots from the field and went 2 for 2 from the free-throw line to power the Golden Flyers. He also contributed five assists and four steals in 24 minutes.
Three others also reached double figures in points. Junior
Jeff DeHimer had a season-high 15 points on 7 for 8 shooting. Sophomore guard
Rayvon Higdon added 13 points and senior
Tyler Smith dropped in 12.
Nazareth made 35 of 60 shots from the field and 15 of 19 free throws. The Golden Flyers also had a 40-30 rebounding advantage with junior
Ryan McAdam leading the way with eight.
