CUMULATIVE STATSROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Frontcourt starters Jon Onyiriuka and Uche Ndubizu combined for 42 points and 21 rebounds Tuesday to lift visiting Rochester to a 68-51 non-conference victory over Nazareth in men's basketball at the Kidera Gymnasium.
The Yellowjackets, ranked ninth nationally by d3hoops.com, improved to 3-0, while the Golden Flyers suffered their first defeat of the season and now stand at 2-1.
UR scored the first six points of the game and held the Golden Flyers scoreless for the first nine minutes in a dominating defensive effort. Nazareth made just 7 of 22 first-half shots (31.8 percent) and 19 of 48 for the game (39.6 percent). UR led 31-17 at halftime and stayed comfortably ahead in the second half.
Nazareth closed to within 41-32 with 11:13 left on a three-point field goal by
Joe Canori, but Rochester scored the next three baskets -- two by Ndubizu and one by Onyiriuka -- to boost the lead to 47-32 with 7:30 left.
Onyiriuka, a 6-foot-7 senior, had game highs in points (22) and rebounds (13), while Ndubizu, a 6-foot-6 senior, had 20 points on 10 for 12 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. The Yellowjackets made 28 of 54 shots from the field (51.9 percent).
Three Nazareth players finished with 12 points --
Rayvon Higdon,
Corey McAdam and
Ryan McAdam.
Corey McAdam also had 10 assists and three steals.
Nazareth is off until Dec. 1 when the Golden Flyers travel to Oswego for a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
