CUMULATIVE STATSROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore guard
Rayvon Higdon came off the bench for the second day in a row to spark Nazareth to an 88-71 men's basketball victory over New Paltz on day two of the annual Chuck Resler Tournament hosted by the University of Rochester.
Higdon led the Golden Flyers (2-0) with 19 points by making 8 of 10 shots from the field while going 3 for 5 from the free throw line.
Four other Nazareth players also scored in double digits --
Joe Canori with 17 points,
Tyler Smith with 14 and
Corey McAdam and
Ryan McAdam each with 12.
Corey McAdam also passed for nine assists and broke the tournament assist record with 18 in the two games. He broke the record of 16 held by UR's Tom Lowney more than 20 years ago. The Golden Flyers also defeated Oneonta, 79-69, in Friday's season opener.
Nazareth made 17 of 29 first-half shots (58.6 percent) while holding New Paltz to 10 baskets in 34 attempts (29.4 percent) to take a commanding 46-22 lead at the break. New Paltz shot much better in the second half (21 for 30, 70 percent), but couldn't break into Nazareth's double-digit advantage.
Nazareth ended up shooting 33 for 62 (53.2 percent) overall and 20 for 26 (76.9 percent) from the foul line. Former Nazareth player Kyle Nelson, now a junior at New Paltz, led the Hawks with a game-high 27 points.
