CUMULATIVE STATSROCHESTER, N.Y. -- William Smith's Tracy Stankavage (Chittenango HS/Chittenango, NY) headed in a corner kick off the foot of Megan Stevens (Saratoga Springs HS/Saratoga Springs, NY) early in the first half to lift the visiting Herons to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over Nazareth Tuesday at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Stankavage's goal enabled the fifth-ranked Herons to remain unbeaten at 11-0-1 with the non-conference victory. The Golden Flyers had a four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 9-3 overall.
Stankavage's goal was her second of the season and came in the 15th minute off a perfectly placed corner kick by Stevens. Stankavage headed her shot past Nazareth goalie Hillary Simon (Homer HS/Homer, NY), who finished with four saves overall.
Nazareth turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Herons 10-4, but William Smith goalie Alice Binns (Beaver Country Day HS/Boston, MA) was equal to the challenge as she finished with eight saves for her fourth shutout of the season.
Nazareth had a flurry of chances in the second half with the best opportunity coming in the 60th minute when midfielder Rachel Cushman (Irondequoit HS/Rochester, NY) hit the crossbar with a shot from about 30 yards out. Nazareth finished with a 15-8 shooting advantage overall.
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday when the Golden Flyers visit Stevens for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
