Flyers blank RIT, 1-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. --- Junior Rachel Cushman (Irondequoit HS/Rochester, NY) scored the only goal of the game late in the first half Tuesday to lift host Nazareth to a 1-0 women's soccer victory over RIT at Golden Flyer Stadium.

The victory ended a four-game winless streak for the Golden Flyers, who clinched a spot in next week's Empire 8 Conference Tournament with the victory. Nazareth improved to 10-5-1 overall and 5-2 in conference games. RIT is 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Empire 8.

Cushman's goal, her fifth of the season came in the 30th minute and broke a four-game scoring drought for the Golden Flyers, who hadn't scored since a 4-3 win over Kean Oct. 6. Cushman took advantage of a corner kick by senior Julie Birbilis (Ballston Spa HS/Ballston Spa, NY) as she headed in the the cross for the game-winning score.

Nazareth dominated the game statistically with a 20-3 edge in shots, including an 8-1 edge in the second half. Freshman goalie Hillary Simon (Homer HS/Homer, NY) needed to make just one save to record her fourth shutout of the season. Ashley Conti made 13 saves for RIT.

Nazareth closes out its regular-season schedule at Utica Saturday at 2 p.m. After that, The Golden Flyers will compete in the E8 Tournament Nov. 2 and 4.
