
Kevin Broderick, a Nazareth alum and former player, completed his 28th season as a collegiate head coach in 2023-24. The Golden Flyers were 19-8, including going 14-2 Empire play, and heading to the championship game for the third consecutive season. Broderick, who serves as the Associate Athletic Director at Nazareth was a national leader during the 2021 season of helping change NCAA Legislation so that DIII Athletes received an additional year of eligibility because of the shortened COVID season.
In 2023-24, for the second year in a row, Nazareth finished first out of 412 teams in the country in fewest turnovers per game at 8.6 and the Golden Flyers were also tops in the country with an assist-to turnover-ratio of 1.63 to 1.0. Junior Luke Insley led the country, including Divisions 1, 2, and 3 with a turnover ratio of 6.75 to 1.0. In addition, Nazareth's offense ranked #2 in the country in offensive efficiency with 1.05 points per possession rating.
For the past three seasons, Broderick has directed three National Association of Basketball Coaches All-East District players in Logan Blankenberg (23-24), Jonathan Park (22-23), and Stephen Gabel (2021-22). All three members were d3hoops.com all-region selections as well.
In 21-22, the Golden Flyers amassed a school-record 24 wins -- including 17 in a row at one stretch -- captured the Empire 8 Conference championship for the fourth time and gained an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Nazareth was selected to host the first two rounds of the 64-team event and played in front of capacity crowds on successive days.
"I don't think that any of the other hosting venues could have had a better atmosphere than we did (at Nazareth)," Broderick said after the Golden Flyers knocked off Westfield State in a first-round game on March 4 for their first post-season win in 24 years. "We've always had great basketball tradition here and it felt like the whole Nazareth community had a piece of it."
The 2024-25 season will be Broderick's 16th at Nazareth in which he has a .670 win percentage (258-127).. He was named head coach in 2009, replacing Mike Daley, who went 318-284 in 23 seasons. Broderick reached a major milestone himself in 2021 amid the tumult of the COVID-19 pandemic as he celebrated his 400th coaching win. He also surpassed 200 wins as Nazareth coach during the 2021-22 season and stands at 467-277 (.628) overall through 28 seasons.
The last six seasons (including the pandemic-altered 2020-21 campaign) have been especially prosperous as Nazareth has amassed 111 wins with 72 coming in Empire 8 Conference play. The 2019-20 team finished first in the regular-season standings and gained the top seed for the E8 Tournament. The 21-6 record marked the most victories by a Nazareth team in 17 years and enabled the Golden Flyers to earn E8 Coaching Staff of he Year for the third time over a five-year span.
The E8 title in 21-22 marked the fourth for Nazareth -- and third for Broderick -- and ninth NCAA Tournament berth. They also won the E8 in title 2018 with a 20-8 overall record and a 13-3 league mark; and in his first season of 2009-10 with an overall mark of 18-10.
His third season included an overall record of 18-9 and a berth in the E8 Conference Tournament. In 2014, Nazareth finished 19-8 overall and was regular-season conference co-champion with Hartwick. The Golden Flyers lost to the Hawks in the E8 championship game. In 2015-16, Nazareth finished 17-9 overall and won a school-record 13 conference games (matched in 2017-18 and 2021-22). Nazareth made the E8 playoffs again in 2016-17 and finished 15-11 overall.
A 1989 Nazareth graduate, Broderick was chosen to replace Daley following an extensive search and was recommended by a committee that included Nazareth Sports Hall of Famer and former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy.
“Kevin Broderick is the right person to keep the Nazareth basketball program on the right track,” said Van Gundy, who has coached in the NBA for the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets and now serves as a television analyst for ABC and ESPN. “As a Nazareth alum, Kevin is a great fit in that the product he is selling is one that he has already purchased for himself.”
A native of Fulton, N.Y., Broderick had a record of 209-150 at Oswego in 13 seasons, including a 16-11 mark and the regular-season co-championship of the State University of New York Athletic Conference in his final season, 2008-09. He coached the Lakers to eight straight winning seasons and had 20-win campaigns in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2007-08. He also coached the Lakers to the ECAC Upstate title in ’04-05. He was named SUNYAC Coach of the Year in 1997-98 after taking the Lakers from a 5-19 record the previous season to a 16-13 mark in ’97-98.
Broderick’s coaching experience includes two seasons as an assistant coach at Canisius College and one season each as an assistant at Genesee Community College, LeMoyne College and Nazareth. At Canisius from 1994 through 1996, Broderick worked under the direction of former Nazareth head coach John Beilein, who has had several Division I coaching stints, most recently at the University of Michigan. In 1995-96, he helped the Golden Griffins to a 19-11 record and the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth in 39 years.
Broderick also has worked at numerous camps and clinics and is the director of the popular Nazareth Basketball Camp.
As a basketball player, Broderick was a four-year member of Nazareth’s basketball team and was team captain as a senior in 1988-89. As the team’s starting point guard for two seasons, Broderick became renowned for his precise passing as he averaged 7.7 and 8.4 assists per game respectively for his last two seasons. He ranks third all-time in career assists at Nazareth with 460. As a Nazareth senior, Broderick was the recipient of the Robert A. Kidera Scholar-Athlete award, which recognizes academic and athletic excellence.
Broderick played scholastically at Bishop Cunningham High School in Oswego, where he was selected New York State Small Schools Player of the Year after leading his team to the state title in 1985.
Broderick graduated from Nazareth with a degree in Business Education and a concentration in Marketing. He has a Master’s Degree in Counselor Education from Oswego and a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from Canisius. He is married to the former Jennifer Board, a 1990 Nazareth graduate and Kidera Scholar-Athlete award winner for swimming.
In 2021-22, Broderick was able to savor the unique opportunity of coaching all three of his sons. Brendan, 24, Patrick, 22, returned for post-graduate seasons, while Ryan, 19, was a red-shirt freshman on the team.
