OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Nazareth's men's lacrosse season came to a decisive end Wednesday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as 13th-ranked Stevenson scored early and often in a 19-6 victory over the 20th-ranked Golden Flyers.
After winning a pair of overtime games last week to win the Empire 8 Conference championship, Nazareth finishes with an overall record of 11-9 for 2017 after making its 22nd NCAA appearance.
The host Mustangs scored the first six goals of the game, including five in the first quarter, to leave little doubt. They extended the lead to 11-2 by halftime and 16-3 after three quarters.
Stevenson, 14-5 overall, advances to the next round Saturday at RIT.
Jack Crowley and
Paul Walter each had two goals for Nazareth.
Joe Eiskant and
Jacob Gray also had goals.
Connor Chapman had a pair of assists. Crowley and
Nick Rodin also posted assists.
The Golden Flyers employed three goalies.
Alex Winkler started and played into the second quarter, making five saves against eight goals allowed.
Andrew Leahey made one saves and
Rick Kronenwett played the second half and had nine saves.
The Golden Flyers had difficulty from the outset against the Mustangs' pressure defense as they committed seven turnovers in the opening quarter and 21 for the game. Nazareth won the opening face-off, but committed a turnover before generating a shot and Stevenson capitalized with the game's first goal just 1:04 into the game. The Mustangs scored again just 40 seconds later and then converted an extra-man opportunity four minutes after that. Kyle Donofrio then scored two of his four goals before the quarter ended to make the score 5-0.
D'Onofrio also had one assist for the Mustangs and Tyler Fuhrman also scored four times.
Stevenson finished with advantages in shots (52-37) and ground balls (40-36). Nazareth won 15 of 29 face-offs with
Seth DeLisle capturing 14 of 26 with eight ground balls. Long-stick
Brian Defliese had seven ground balls.
