Nazareth overwhelms Houghton, 26-4

Golden Flyers improved to 8-7 overall, visit RIT April 25

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth scored the first 15 goals of the game Tuesday and six different Golden Flyer players were credited with their first career goals in a 26-4 romp over Houghton in a men's lacrosse game at Burke Field.

Nazareth won for the third straight time and zoned in on an Empire 8 Conference playoff berth by improving to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Houghton dropped to 2-11 overall.

Freshman Kevin Hussey scored three goals, including the first tally of his career, and added an assist. Freshman Griffin Avery also scored twice and added two assists. Sophomores Jack Crowley and Tommy McCormick also scored two goals as did juniors Chris Murphy and Paul Walter. Avery and McCormick each scored for the first time as did freshman Walker Denton and David Legris and sophomore longstick Jordan Goldbourn.

Nazareth used a 28-3 advantage in shots to build an insurmountable 17-1 halftime lead. The Golden Flyers scored eight times in the opening quarter with Crowley and Walter each scoring twice and Hunter Burdick contributing two assists. Anthony Basile, Joe Eiskant, Jonathan Gray and Luke Longo also scored.

Hussey scored all three of his goals and Murphy had both of his goals in the second quarter as the Golden Flyers continued to roll. Hussey also assisted on Avery's first goal with 3:35 left in the half. Goldbourn, McCormick and Matthew May also scored.

Nazareth added six more goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth. Juniors Ben Bickford and Gavin Shaner and sophomore Mike Riis were among the third-quarter scorers. Avery, Legris and McCormick also tallied.

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Ben Annal had a goal and two assists. Denton and Jonathan Olbrich also scored.

Nazareth won 25 of the 32 faceoffs with Seth DeLisle taking 9 of 12, Shaner 5 of 6 and freshman Tim Vinton 11 of 14. Freshmen Alex Winkler and Andrew Leahey and junior Rick Kronenwett each spent time in goal.

The Golden Flyers are off this weekend, then return to action Tuesday when they visit RIT for a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
