PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Host St. John Fisher built a 4-1 halftime advantage against Nazareth Saturday and held off the Golden Flyers in the second half to gain a 10-8 men's lacrosse victory in Empire 8 Conference action at Growney Stadium.
Nazareth dropped to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Cardinals improved to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the E8. The Golden Flyers visit Alfred Wednesday for a 4 p.m. face-off.
Hunter Burdick and
Jack Crowley each had two goals and
Seth DeLisle won 14 of 21 faceoffs for the Golden Flyers, but Fisher proved resilient in extending its lead to 9-4 early in the fourth quarter.
Nazareth's offense was consistently frustrated by Fisher goalie Tanner Swan, who made 10 of his 16 saves in the first half while yielding just one goal in the first 30 minutes. In fact, Nazareth was held scoreless until 7:04 remained in the second quarter when Crowley recorded an unassisted tally. That trimed the lead to 2-1, but Fisher got goals from TJ VanDeusen and Andrew Rosso before the quarter ended to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Golden Flyers opened the third quarter with goals by
Jacob Gray and Crowley to swing the momentum back in their direction. Fisher, however, responded by scoring five of the next six goals to take a commanding 9-4 lead with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter.
Two goals by Burdick and one from
Joe Eiskant sliced the lead to 9-7, but the Cardinals again proved to be resilient as Nick Papayanakos scored unassisted with 1:52 left. A goal by Nazareth's
Anthony Basile with 1:14 left closed out the scoring.
The defeat came for Nazareth despite advantages in shots (40-33) and ground balls (31-21). DeLisle had 14 of Nazareth;s ground balls and defenseman
Brian Defliese had six to go with four caused turnovers.
Alex Winkler played all 60 minutes in goal and had six saves.
