OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Nazareth dropped its second men's lacrosse game of the weekend to a nationally ranked foe Saturday. Denison scored the first three goals of the game and the first four of the second half and went on to take a 17-6 victory over the Golden Flyers on day two of the Mustang Classic at Stevenson University.
Denison, ranked 17th nationally, improved to 5-1 overall. Nazareth, which lost to sixth-ranked York, 13-9, on Friday, is 2-4 and visits Hamilton Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Denison dominated play from the outset, generating a 49-23 advantage in shots and a 31-21 edge in ground balls. Nazareth also committed 19 turnovers to Denison's six.
Denison used a 28-8 first-half shooting advantage to build a 9-4 lead.
Jack Crowley had a pair of goals for Nazareth, while
Hunter Burdick and
Anthony Basile each scored.
Ben Bickford and
Luke Longo each picked up assists.
The Big Red erased any second-half comeback thoughts by outscoring Nazareth 4-0 in the third quarter and 4-2 in the fourth.
Nazareth broke its scoring drought early in the fourth quarter when
Seth DeLisle gathered in the opening face-off and passed to long-stick
Parker Lawrence on the crease for his first career goal.
Chris Murphy scored an extra-man goal in the fourth quarter with an assist from Burdick.
DeLisle went 14-for-24 on faceoffs and had 11 of the Golden Flyers' 21 ground balls.
Alex Winkler started in goal and made 10 saves in nearly 50 minutes. Freshman
Andrew Leahey saw his first action of the season and made two saves over the final 10 minutes.
