SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Four different players scored three goals each for Nazareth Monday in men's lacrosse as the Golden Flyers evened their overall record at 2-2 with a convincing 17-10 victory over Western New England in a non-conference game at the Carrier Dome.
Junior attackman
Connor Chapman scored a career-best three goals, while senior
Joe Eiskant and juniors
Jacob Gray and
Paul Walter also scored three times for the Golden Flyers, who travel to Stevenson, Md. this weekend for the annual Mustang Classic. Nazareth plays York, Pa. Friday at 3 p.m. and Denison of Ohio Saturday at 12:30. Western New England dropped to 0-5.
Sophomore
Jack Crowley and senior
Luke Longo each scored twice for Nazareth and junior
Ben Bickford netted his first goal of the season. Longo also had a pair of assists.
Nazareth dominated most of the action with a 48-23 advantage in shots and a 42-22 edge in ground balls, aided mostly by junior
Seth DeLisle, who won 18 of 22 faceoffs and collected 13 ground balls. Nazareth also was a perfect 13-for-13 on clears.
Western New England scored first as Nicholas Beauchamp delivered his first of three goals. Nazareth answered by scoring seven straight goals, bridging the first and second quarters to build a commanding 7-1 lead. Eiskant scored all three of his goals during that stretch and Bickford and Walter each scored in the first period. Crowley scored in the opening minute of the second quarter, then Chapman and Eiskant also delivered as Nazareth took control.
Chapman added two more goals in the second quarter as Nazareth's lead continued to grow. Walter's next two goals, meanwhile, each came a fraction of a second before time expired to end the second and third quarters. Nazareth added four more goals in the third quarter and three more in the fourth. Both of Longo's goals came unassisted in the third quarter, with Gray and Walter also contributing.
Two more goals by Gray and one for Crowley boosted Nazareth's lead to 17-6 before the Golden Bears scored the last four goals.
Freshman
Alex Winkler played the first 55 minutes in goals and had six saves and allowed six goals.
Rick Kronenwett came in for the last five minutes and had one save. Winkler faced only seven shots in the first half as Nazareth controlled possession time. Long-sticks
