Nazareth competes at University of Rochester's Invitational

Several athletes record personal bests

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's men's and women's track and field teams were in action again on Saturday when the Golden Flyers traveled to the University of Rochester for the Spring Invitational. Several athletes turned in personal bests. Senior Jake Lafaver claimed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of :50.75 while junior Michaela Gildemeyer's took first in the women's 400 event with a time of :59.65. Gildemeyer's time was a personal best over her previous best of 1:00.68, which she ran at the Washington & Lee meet in March.

Sophomores Luis Rivera and Brandon Vuolo continued to break their personal bests in the throwing events. Both throwers set personal bests in the hammer with Rivera breaking a school record with his third-place 49.78 meters mark (163 ft., 3 3/4 in.), which beat his previous best of 47.98 meters. Vuolo's prior personal best was 39.87 meters that he set at the Empire 8 Championships last week. Vuolo recorded a throw of 44 meters (144 ft., 4 1/4 in.) for fifth place. Vuolo was also second in the shot (12.82 meters; 42 ft., 3/4 in.).

Additional top performers in the men's meet included senior Zack Lafaver, who took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.51. Freshman Jenoy Merchant was fourth in the 400-meters (:53.26), and classmate Richardson Pierre set a personal best in the 100-meters with a sixth-place finsih of :11.61 to edge his prior best of :11.69. Nazareth's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays each took third. The 4x100 team, composed of Pierre, classmate Jenoy Merchant, and sophomores Khiary Gayle and Clement Mutambo, finished in :45.52. The 4x400 team, consisting of the Lafaver brothers, Merchant and freshman Jacob Murray finished with a time of 3:30.51.

Sophomore Patrick Neureuter added a 12th-place finish in the 5-kilometer run (17:07) while Murray and senior Matt Fedrizzi recorded 10th (2:04.72) and 11th-place (2:04.76) finishes, respectively in the 800.

In the women's meet, junior Sibongile Chisi edged her previous best of 3.12 meters in the pole vault with a mark of 3.13 meters (10 ft., 3 1/4 in.), which was also another school record for her. Freshman Elisa Marchione also took second in the 100 hurdles with a time of :16.73, and junior Hannah Brackley was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of :12.68. Junior Kate Durr was third in the high jump (1.45m; 4 ft., 9 in.), while sophomore Amanda Entress was fourth in the triple jump (10.18m; 33 ft. 4 3/4 in.) and long jump (4.99m; 16 ft., 4 1/2 in.).

Additionally, Sophomore Kenzi Coon was fifth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:12.73, and junior Kassandra Lathrop was ninth in the 5-kilometer run with a time of 22:13. In the 200-meter sprint, junior Allison Wean was 10th with a time of :28.95, followed by freshman Alex Walker in 15th with a time of :29.89.

The Golden Flyers are in action again on May 2nd-3rd at St. John Fisher for the NYSCTC Championships.
