Nazareth places third in E8 track meet

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Nazareth's women's track and field team broke three school records and tied a fourth Saturday as the Golden Flyers finished a solid third at the Empire 8 Conference Track and Field Championships at St. John Fisher's Polisseni Complex.

The Golden Flyers totaled 82.25 points to finish behind only Ithaca (197.50) and Stevens (93). Utica (65), St. John Fisher (58.25), Alfred (32) and Houghton (30) also competed. The Golden Flyers also finished sixth in the men's standings with 34 points. Ithaca won the competition with 196 points, followed by Utica (124), St. John Fisher (112), Stevens (59), Alfred (48), Nazareth (34) and Houghton (15).

In the women's meet, sophomore Gabrielle Lebihan broke her week-old school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase  and also broke the meet record with a first-place time of 11:02.76. She ran 11:20.05 at last week's ROC City Classic at Nazareth. Lebihan also finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:14.04. Freshman Emily Thompson was sixth in the same race (18:45.59).

Junior Sibongile Chisi broke her own record in the pole vault as she cleared 10 feet for the first time with an official height of 3.12 meters (10 feet, 2 3/4 inches). Junior Michaela Gildemeyer broke a seven-year-old record by placing fourth in the 1,500-merer run with a time of 4:47.40, more than three seconds faster than Jessica Brown's mark that stood since 2007. Sophomore Taylor Pierson tied the school record in the 100-meter dash as she finished third in 12.67 seconds, the same time that Melissa Cutcliffe recorded in 2009.

Chisi also helped Nazareth score points in a pair of relays. The 1600-meter relay team of Hannah Brackley, Gildemeyer, Chisi and Allison Wean finished first in 4:07.01, while Brackley, Amanda Entress, Pierson and Chisi combined for second place (:50.09) in the 400-meter relay.

Other top performances included a first-place from Gildemeyer in the 800-meter run (2:21.48); a second- and a third-place finish from Brackley in the 400- and 200-meter dashes with times of :57.92 and :25.87; a third-place finish for Pierson in the long jump (5.44 meters = 17 feet, 10 inches); and a sixth-place finish for freshman Kelsey Hill in the triple jump (10.31 meters = 33 feet, 10 inches).

In the men's meet, sophomore Luis Rivera was the Golden Flyers' lone champion as he won the hammer throw with a distance of 44.42 meters (145 feet, 8 3/4 inches). Sophomore Brandon Vuolo was sixth in the same event (39.87 meters = 130 feet, 9 1/2 inches). He also finished third in the shot put (13.21 meters = 43 feet, 4 inches).

Sophomore Khiary Gayle finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.15 meters (43 feet, 1 1/4 inches) and senior Jake Lafaver was third in the 1,500-meter run (4:05.33) and was followed by senior Matt Fedrizzi in seventh place (4:12.27). Senior Zack Lafaver was fifth in the 800-meter run (2:00.68) and was followed by freshman Jacob Murray in sixth place (2:00.92).

The Lafaver brothers ran with Murray and freshman Jenoy Merchant to finish fifth in the 1600-meter relay (3:31.54).
