LEXINGTON, Va. -- Nazareth's men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor seasons over the weekend at the Washington & Lee Carnival. No team scoring was kept, but sophomore throwers
Brandon Vuolo and
Luis Rivera were responsible for three school records.
Vuolo broke his own school records in the shot put and discus, while Rivera broke his own record in the hammer throw. Vuolo placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 13.19 meters (43 feet, 3 1/4 inches) and ninth in the discus with a distance of 38.31 meters (125 feet, 8 inches). Rivera finished sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.06 meters (151 feet, 1 inch) and was 12th in the discus at 36.52 meters (119 feet, 10 inches).
Other top performers included sophomore
Khiary Gayle, who placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.75 meters (41 feet, 10 inches); freshman
Richardson Pierre, who was sixth in the long jump at 6.17 meters (20 feet, 3 inches); and senior Zach Lafaver, who was 18th in the 400-meter dash (:53.53) and 20th in the 800-meter run (2:00.92).
Nazareth also had several top finishers in the women's meet, including junior
Michaela Gildemeyer, who was second in the 800-meter run (2:19.05) and fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:00.68) and sophomore Gabrielle Lebihan, who was second in the 1,500-meter run (4:53.28). Freshman
Emily Thompson also finished seventh in the 1,500 with a time of 5:00.22.
Sophomore
Taylor Pierson, fresh off her All-American efforts in the long jump during the indoor season, placed second Saturday with a distance of 5.10 meters (16 feet, 8 3/4 inches). She also ran fifth in the 100-meter dash (:12.91). Freshman
Emily Ross was third in the discus (29.99 meters = 98 feet, 5 inchyes) and seventh in the shot put (8.99 meters = 29 feet, 6 inches).
Freshman
Elisa Marchione, competing in her first meet, finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (:16.69) and junior
Sibongile Chisi was sixth in the pole vault (2.91 meters = 9 feet, 6 1/2 inches). Graduate student
Jessica Hogan was fifth in the hammer throw (32.09 meters = 105 feet, 3 inches) and freshman
Kelsey Hill was seventh in the triple jump (10.15 meters = 33 feet, 3 1/4 inches).
