ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored the game's first 11 goals Friday against Alfred as the Golden Flyers won for the third straight time with a 17-3 victory over teh Saxons in women's lacrosse.
The game was the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams. Nazareth improved to 4-4 overall, while Alfred dropped to 2-1.
Senior
Alyssa Johnston and sophomore
Brianna Mancini each scored three goals for the Golden Flyers, while senior
Erinn Wood, junior
Emily Rothrock and sophomore
Brooke Sullivan each scored twice. Senior
Megan Cregan contributed one goal and three assists.
Mancini scored the first goal of the game just 42 seconds in off a pass from Cregan and the Golden Flyers scored three more times before the game was five minutes old. Wood and Sullivan each converted free-position chances and Cregan followed with her 14th goal of the season off an assist from Wood.
Johnston scored twice and
Kayleigh Pearson,
Carly Gates, Rothrock, Wood and Mancini each scored before the half ended.
Alfred scored the first two goals of the second half, but Sullivan and Mancini scored two minutes apart to extend the lead to 13-2. The second half also included goals by
Leah Cronister, Johnston, Rockrock and
MacKenzie Haley, whose score with 8:26 to go was the first of her career.
Junior
Tara Prosak started in goal and made four saves in the first half. Senior
Shelby Robinson played the second half and had two saves.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (28-12), ground balls (19-7) and draw controls (15-7). Nazareth plays its final two home games next weekend against Ithaca and Utica. Both games start at 1 p.m.
