ROCHESTER, N.Y.-- Nazareth swept visiting Medaille in softball Wednesday evening with an 8-2 victory in game one and a 20-0 win in game two. In game two, Nazareth used a balanced hitting attack to score 20 runs in four innings as each batter scored at least one run. Freshman
Kaitlin Graham tallied four runs scored, three RBIs, and three hits in the second game.
With the victories, the Golden Flyers improve to 14-20 overall. Medaille drops to 17-17 following the losses.
In game one, sophomore
Kelly Kocher continued her strong pitching as she had a game-high 14 strikeouts for the Golden Flyers. Nazareth took a 2-0 lead in the third inning following a two-RBI single by sophomore
Brittany Patenaude, which scored Graham and freshman
Alli Robords.
The Mavericks answered in the fourth inning with a solo homerun by Alyssa Zemla, but the Golden Flyers tallied three runs in the bottom half of the inning to stretch their lead to 5-1. A two-out single by senior
Polly Muehlenkamp scored senior
Kelley Horbal and Robords. Graham then followed with a single to score Muehlenkamp.
In the fifth inning, Medaille's Holley McAllister scored following an RBI triple by Brieanna Brink to cut Nazareth's advantage to 5-2. The Golden Flyers, however, secured the victory with one run in the bottom of the inning and two runs in the sixth. Sophomore
Casey Mathers hit a double to open the bottom of the fifth then scored on a fielder's choice. Mathers capped the Golden Flyers' scoring in the sixth with a two-run homerun that also scored Graham, who had singled earlier in the inning.
In game two, Nazareth jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, then scored six runs in the second, five runs in the third, and seven runs in the fourth. The 20 runs scored sets a new school record, as does the 19 RBIs and 21 hits that the Golden Flyers collected. Despite running the bases conservatively in the fourth inning, the Golden Flyers continued to stretch their lead with well-placed hits.
In addition to the offensive output from Graham, who finished the doubleheader with a total of five runs scored, four RBIs, and six hits, Horbal and Muehlenkamp each scored three runs.
Brittany Patenaude, Mathers,
Katie Valerio,
Ann Schoff, and
Heather Irish each crossed the plate twice, while
Mandy Weakley finished with one run scored.
Horbal, Graham, Weakley, and Valerio each recorded three RBIs during the game while Muehlenkamp, Patenaude, and Schoff had two RBIs. Irish added one RBI to the Golden Flyers' offensive attack.
Mathers earned the victory in game two as she pitched four shutout innings with six strikeouts. Mathers allowed the Mavericks just four hits in five innings.
Nazareth closes its conference schedule Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against RIT. The Golden Flyers will recognize their four seniors:
Kelley Horbal,
Jennifer Linnan,
Polly Muehlenkamp, and
Ann Schoff before the first game. The Golden Flyers host Keuka in a non-conference doubleheader to close their regular season on May 2nd.
