Kline finishes 3rd in 100 fly

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Freshman Jacob Kline broke the Nazareth school record in the 100-yard butterfly Saturday and finished third overall in that event at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association championships at Nottingham High School.

Nazareth is in 12th place in the team standings with a score of 219.50. Union was first with 801 with Stevens close behind with 798.

Kline bettered his preliminary time by swimming :51.89 seconds, topping the school record of :52.68 held by Josh Nellist since 2002. Only Steven Schapp (51.14) and Kevin Jung (51.84) of Union finished ahead of Kline.

Kline also was part of a school record in the 200 medley relay as Nazareth was in 10th place with a time of 1:37.94. Seniors #R.C. Weston and Rob Wortel also swam in that event along with freshman Mike Bidwell#. That group set a school record in the prelims with a time of 1:37.86.

Bidwell competed in the 100 breaststroke and was 15th with a time of 1:01.80. Weston was in 23rd place in tthe 400 IM (4:32.58) and 18th in the 100 backstroke (:55.40). Wortel was 20th in the 200 freestyle (1:48.67).

Nazareth placed eighth in the 800 free relay with Bidwell, Wortel, Dan Walton and Kline with a time of 7:14.36.

Swimming resumes Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
