ALBANY, NY (
nazathletics.com) - After scoring twice in the first half, the Golden Flyers carried their lead through a steady second half to earn the 2-0 win over Russell Sage on Saturday afternoon. Nazareth improves to 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in Empire 8 conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first 20 minutes were back‑and‑forth, with each side producing two shot attempts. Cash Rosado nearly put Nazareth in front in the 23rd minute, but his shot rang off the post.
- In the 33rd minute, a corner kick from Benjamin Renick found Joey Weaver who placed a beautiful header in the upper right corner, beating the Gator goalkeeper to give Nazareth a 1-0 lead.
- Shortly after, Nazareth found themselves with numbers on the attack where they would extend their lead to 2-0. A through ball from Ethan Clark landed on the foot of Benjamin Renick, who spun around and buried it with his left foot in the lower right corner.
- The first half finished with both teams recording eight shots.
- Nazareth came out of the break looking to extend their lead, generating five shots in the first 15 minutes of play.
- The Golden Flyers did a good job shutting down the Sage attack, as they closed out the game with a 2-0 win. Nazareth finished the game with a 16-12 shot advantage.
GAME NOTES:
- Benjamin Renick led the way offensively for the Golden Flyers as he recorded a goal and an assist
- Joey Weaver tallied his second goal of the season
- Bryan Tirado stood firm in goal, stopping all 6 shots to preserve his second shutout of the year
- Five yellow cards were handed out during the match (4 for Sage, 1 for Nazareth)
- With the win, Nazareth moves to 8-2-1 all time against Russell Sage
