ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Softball (19-11, 13-5) split its midweek E8 doubleheader with crosstown rival St. John Fisher (23-11, 14-4) Wednesday afternoon at Flyer Field. The Cardinals took game one 8-7 before the Golden Flyers came back to win game two 10-1 in five innings.
Nazareth sits one game behind Fisher in the Empire 8 standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
GAME ONE: ST. JOHN FISHER 8, NAZARETH 7
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nazareth threatened early as Alexis Brown singled and stole second in the first, but stranded her at third before St. John Fisher broke through with a four-run second inning on three hits and multiple walks to take a 4-0 lead.
- The Golden Flyers answered in the third when Kaijah Alexander launched a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 4-2, then continued to chip away with a sacrifice fly from Ruby Marrapese in the fourth and an RBI single from Madison Hicks in the fifth to even the score at 4-4.
- After Nazareth pitchers worked out of traffic in the third and fifth, Fisher regained control with a three-run sixth inning on a double and single through the middle, stretching the lead to 7-4 despite limited strikeout production from both sides.
- Nazareth responded immediately in the bottom half as Bryanna Moroughan delivered an RBI single to make it 7-5, but Fisher added an insurance run in the seventh to extend the margin to 8-5.
- The Golden Flyers mounted a final push in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs before Ella Maloney lined a two-run single to right center, bringing Nazareth within one, but the rally ended on the bases to seal an 8-7 final.
