ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) – Senior
Grace Gardner reached the 100-point milestone for her career on Wednesday, posting a season-high 7 points (2G, 5A) as the Nazareth women's lacrosse team handled Alfred 16-8 at NLPA Field. Gardner's afternoon helped power an offensive effort that saw 10 different Golden Flyers find the back of the net.
How it Happened:
- Nazareth came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, building a dominant 9-0 lead through the first quarter. Gwen Newtown led the charge with three first-quarter goals, while Gardner set the tone with a goal and three assists in the frame alone. Megan Martin added two goals and Maria DeLorenzo and Sofia Sherwood each chipped in as well.
- Alfred managed to trim the deficit slightly in the second quarter, scoring twice to make it 10-2 at the half. Nazareth's lone score came from Anna Myers, assisted by Newtown.
- The third quarter featured a back-and-forth exchange, with Alfred pulling within six at one point. Gardner converted a man-up opportunity to push the lead to 11-2, but Alfred responded with three straight goals to make things briefly interesting at 11-5. Nazareth steadied themselves down the stretch of the period, with Isabella Bonaventre scoring twice — including a man-up goal assisted by Gardner — and Elizabeth Smith adding one to send the teams into the fourth quarter with a 14-5 Nazareth advantage.
- Both teams traded goals in the fourth, with Newtown closing out her impressive day by potting her fourth goal of the game to seal the 16-8 final.
