Softball Earns Two Commanding Wins Over Houghton

ROCHESTER, NY - Nazareth Softball (16-8, 10-2) picked up two commanding run-rule wins over Houghton (4-14, 1-9), 9-1 and 8-0, Wednesday afternoon at Flyer Field.

GAME ONE: NAZARETH 9, HOUGHTON 1 (5 INN.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nazareth jumped in front early, plating three runs in the first inning as Alexis Brown tripled to lead off and later scored on Bryanna Moroughan's RBI groundout. Haleigh Suitor and Ashley Bell followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 3-0.
  • The Golden Flyers added on in the third when Moroughan tripled and came home on Morgan Russo's RBI single, extending the lead to 4-0 while continuing to pressure with timely extra-base hits.
  • Nazareth broke the game open in the fourth, capitalizing on an error before Kaijah Alexander delivered a two-run single and Russo followed with a two-run home run, capping a five-run inning that pushed the advantage to 9-0.
  • In the circle, Avery Zembek controlled the game throughout, allowing just two hits and striking out two while retiring the side in order in three of the first four innings.
  • Houghton's only run came on a solo home run in the fifth, but Zembek responded by closing out the inning to secure the run-rule victory for the Golden Flyers.
GAME NOTES
  • Avery Zembek picked up her fifth-straight win in the circle, improving to 5-0 on the season. The junior tossed five complete innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two.
  • Alexis Brown and Kaijah Alexander led the Golden Flyers at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the first game. With today's performances, Brown has recorded at least one hit in nine consecutive games.
  • Morgan Russo tallied a team-high three RBI in the win, her fifth game this spring with at least three runs batted in.

GAME TWO: NAZARETH 8, HOUGHTON 0 (5 INN.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nazareth struck first in the opening inning as Alexis Brown led off with a double, stole third and scored on Bryanna Moroughan's RBI double to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Golden Flyers broke the game open in the third, capitalizing on multiple defensive miscues to plate six runs. Morgan Russo scored on an error to start the surge, Haleigh Suitor came home on a Maddy Spakoski sacrifice fly, and Ashley Bell, Julia Maciag and Alexis Brown each scored during a stretch fueled by aggressive baserunning and pressure on the defense.
  • Bryanna Moroughan added to the inning with an RBI single, and Kaijah Alexander followed with another RBI knock to cap the six-run frame and push the advantage to 7-0.
  • Madison Hicks controlled the game in the circle, stranding runners in the first and third innings and recording key strikeouts, including a third-inning punchout to halt a potential threat and back-to-back strikeouts in the fourth to maintain the shutout.
  • Hicks also contributed at the plate, leading off the fourth inning with a solo home run to extend the lead to 8-0 and put the run-rule into play.
  • Abigail Brown closed the final inning, working around traffic with a strikeout and a key out on a fielder's choice as Nazareth secured the shutout victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Madison Hicks earned her first shutout victory of the season over Houghton, throwing four scoreless innings and allowing just three hits while fanning four. A dual threat in the circle and at the plate, Hicks also recorded her second home run of the season in the fourth inning.
  • Bryanna Moroughan went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, leading the Golden Flyers with two RBIs in the second game of the afternoon.
