#3 Women's Hockey Suffers First Loss Of Season To Elmira In UCHC Championship Game, 4-1

ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Elmira scored three times in the opening period and handed third-ranked Nazareth its first loss of the season, 4-1 on Saturday in the UCHC Championship Game at Tim Horton's Iceplex. The loss snapped Nazareth's streak of four-straight UCHC Championships. Elmira earns the UCHC conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Hockey Championships which began next weekend. Nazareth will await the selection show on Sunday, March 8 at 8:30 pm on NCAA.com. The Golden Flyers are now 25-1-1 and Elmira moves to 19-5-2.

For Nazareth, Ella Cedrone and Mia Abruzzese were named to the UCHC All-Tournament team. 

How it Happened:
  • Elmira came out swinging in the opening period, scoring three even strength goals.
  • A strong forecheck caused some issues early on for the Golden Flyers.
  • The first goal of the game came just 3:28 in as a blocked shot in front was converted in by Sarah Waszkielewicz to make it 1-0.
  • Elmira's second goal came at the 15:30 with the Soaring Eagles converting a 2-on-1. 
  • The final goal came just :37 seconds later as a loose puck found the stick of MK Boyle who put it into the net.
  • Shots were 15-5 in favor of Elmira in the period.
  • Nazareth was able to right the ship in the second period, outshooting the Soaring Eagles 16-11.
  • The top seed pulled within 3-1 near the midway point of the second on Cedrone's second of the postseason. She took a pass from Abruzzese and fired it passed the goaltender on the power play.
  • Elmira was able to get a huge goal late at the 18:10 mark on the power play to regain a three goal advantage heading into the third period.
  • Nazareth was unable to find the net in the third, despite having an extra attacker for the final 3:40 of the game.
  • Mia Gonsalves made 28 saves in net.
Game Notes:
  • Nazareth had won four-straight UCHC Championships before the 2026 defeat. Defeated Utica 3-2 (OT) -2025; defeated Utica 2-1- 2024; defeated Utica 3-2 (OT) – 2023; defeated Manhattanville 7-0 – 2022.
  • Nazareth's last loss in the UCHC championship game was to Elmira 5-1 in 2021.
  • Cedrone earned all-tournament after registering a goal in both the semifinals and finals, while Abruzzese had an assist in both games.
  • Nazareth will look to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament for the fifth-straight season.
