Geneva, N.Y. – The Nazareth men's volleyball team (9-9 overall, 0-1 in conference) traveled to Geneva, New York once again, this time to take on the Hobart Statesmen (8-9 overall, 0-2 in conference). The Golden Flyers fell short, dropping the match in a sweep of 3 sets to none.
How It Happened
- Hobart established themselves early in the opening set, steadily leading until Nazareth was able to find a rhythm. The Golden Flyers tied things up at 14 before leading for a stretch of their own. Just as Nazareth appeared poised to claim the set, the Statesmen clawed back to tie it back up at 22. Hobart would ride their momentum to finish off the set, taking it by a score of 25-23.
- Set number two was a back-and-forth affair from the get-go. The two teams would trade blows until they reached a score of 12-11 for Hobart. Neither team led by more than two by that point, but the tides would then swing in Nazareth's favor. They went on a 6-0 run to take a 17-12 lead, which they managed to carry all the way through to set point. Leading 24-22 and with a chance to tie the match, the Golden Flyers ran out of steam. The Statesmen managed to score 5 of the following 6 points to take a hard-fought set by a score of 27-25. Hobart subsequently led 2 sets to none.
- With the match on the line, Nazareth wasn't able to regain their footing in the third set. They went down 10-4 early and trailed by at least three until the 26th point of the set, where they cut the Hobart lead to 14-12. The Golden Flyers continued to chip away, finding themselves within just a point of their opponents late in the set, but the Statesmen managed to hold on to secure the sweep, winning the final set by a score of 25-22.
