New York, N.Y. – Nazareth's men's volleyball team visited the New York University Violets for a United Volleyball Conference matchup on Sunday. The Golden Flyers suffered a straight-set loss, but managed to push two sets to extra points, Nazareth falls to 12-12 on the year with a 1-4 conference record. NYU jumps to 15-4 overall and 2-1 in-conference.
How It Happened
- The opening set was a hard fought, back-and-forth affair that saw a tie score 14 different times. NYU appeared to separate themselves by going up 15-10, but Nazareth clawed back to tie the score at 22. The set went on to require extra points, with the Violets finding the edge by a score of 27-25.
- Set number two opened in similar fashion, with the squads trading blows early before New York began to jump ahead thanks to an 8-1 run. This time however, the Golden Flyers weren't able to reel their opponents back in. Nazareth struggled from the service line, relinquishing 6 points from service errors to add onto the 7 they gave up in the previous set. The Violets went on to take this one 25-17, establishing a 2-0 match lead and the opportunity to earn the sweep.
- NYU kept their momentum alive to open the third set, taking the first three points and maintaining that lead until late. The teams continued to trade points at the net, with Nazareth unable to close the gap entirely. It wasn't until a Joe Seliger kill from a Daniel Mangan set that they were able to tie the set up at 23. In an unfortunate sequence, it was once again the serves that led to the Golden Flyers' demise. They committed a service error followed by an NYU ace to close out the set in extra points, putting an end to the match; 3-0 for New York.
