Men’s Volleyball Blanks PSU Behrend, Carlow in Home Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Men's Volleyball (5-2) swept Penn State Behrend (1-1) and Carlow (0-4), 3-0, to open up the Nazareth Invitational Friday night inside Kidera Gymnasium. 

MATCH ONE - NAZARETH 3, PENN STATE BEHREND 0 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The opening frame featured steady back-and-forth play early before Nazareth used a late push, highlighted by kills and aces from Quinn Ringstad and Sean Frawley, to turn a 15-15 tie into a 22-18 lead. The Golden Flyers capitalized on opponent errors and a another kill from Ringstad close out the set at 25-22
  • Nazareth built an early cushion in the second set and never let it slip, stretching a 7-3 edge into a 22-13, double-digit lead behind consistent sideouts and pressure serving, sealing the set at 25-20 on a late kill by Tristan Henderson.
  • After several ties and lead changes through the midpoint, Nazareth took control in the final frame with a decisive run sparked by back-to-back service aces from Quintin Chiles, turning a tight set into a 22-19 advantage and finishing the sweep at 25-20.
GAME NOTES 
  • Ryan Murphy led the Golden Flyers in points for the third consecutive match with 10.5 on nine kills at a .353 clip. The sophomore middle added three blocks and two digs on the night. 
  • AJ Burda posted a team-best 32 assists, his third game this season with 30 or more assists. The senior setter led Nazareth to .250 hitting percentage with four digs, two blocks and two kills. 
  • Sean Frawley and Quintin Chiles chipped in seven kills apiece, Chiles' coming on 10 swings for a team-high .600 hitting percentage. Chiles tacked on five digs, two service errors and a block for 9.5 points. 
MATCH TWO - NAZARETH 3, CARLOW 0

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • After early ties in the first set, Nazareth used a 6-1 surge to a 9-4 lead, then stretched the margin with a run built on back-to-back aces and clean sideouts. Sean Frawley and AJ Burda paced the closing push as Nazareth scored 10 of the final 13 points to take the frame 25-15.
  • Nazareth broke open the second set immediately, racing to a 7-1 lead behind aggressive serving and quick kills from Quinn Ringstad and Austin Drews. A pair of extended service runs pushed the lead to double digits at 19-8 before the Golden Flyers closed the frame by scoring eight of the last 11 points to win the set 25-10. 
  • Nazareth seized early control again in the final frame, turning a brief 2-2 tie into a 10-3 advantage with kills from Frawley and Tristan Henderson, along with multiple service aces. The Golden Flyers kept the pressure on, scoring seven straight late to finish the sweep, 25-8. 
GAME NOTES 
  • Sean Frawley and Austin Drews led the Golden Flyers with 12.5 points, seven kills and five service aces apiece. Drews committed zero attack errors for a .778 hitting percentage on nine swings. 
  • Setters Daniel Mangan, AJ Burda and Allister Spiegel combined for 26 assists and a .542 team hitting percentage.

The Golden Flyers close out the Nazareth Invitational, tomorrow, Jan. 24, against Nichols. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. inside Kidera Gymnasium.
