MARCY, NY (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Men's Volleyball (1-1) split opening day action with a win over Rivier, 3-0, and a loss to Lasell, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Poly Invitational.
MATCH ONE - NAZARETH 3, RIVIER 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nazareth seized control in the opening set by racing to an 8-2 lead and stretching it to 13-4 behind steady sideout scoring and service pressure before closing on a 5-1 run for the 25-13 win.
- In the second set, Nazareth again built an early cushion at 7-2 until Rivier came back to tie it at 18-18. The Golden Flyers responded with three straight points and finished with consecutive kills to secure the 25-23 decision.
- The third set unfolded point-for-point throughout with Nazareth erasing a 19-17 deficit with a kill-and-ace sequence. The Golden Flyers survived set point before ending the match on a service ace at 27-25.
GAME NOTES
- Tristan Henderson led Nazareth with 11 kills on 16 swings for a .625 hitting percentage. He tacked on two digs and a block for 12 points.
- Ryan Murphy contributed eight kills at a .313 clip with two service aces, two blocks and two digs.
- AJ Burda tallied a team-best 27 assists and three service aces, leading the Golden Flyers to a .296 attack percentage.
- Nazareth outblocked Rivier 10-3 at the net.
MATCH TWO - LASELL 3, NAZARETH 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nazareth fell behind early in the opening set after a 5-0 Lasell run but recovered to close within 17-13 before the Lasers used a late surge to claim the set, 25-15.
- The second set stayed tight early with Nazareth trading points and pulling within one several times, but Lasell maintained a slim edge throughout and closed out the final points to take the set, 25-22.
- The final set featured six early ties before a decisive mid-set run put Nazareth behind 18-12. Despite a late push to trim the margin to five, the Golden Flyers were closed out, 25-19.
GAME NOTES
- Tristan Henderson contributed a team-best 11 kills for the second straight match, this time coming at a .500 clip.
- AJ Burda tallied 21 assists in the second game of the afternoon, bringing his total to 48 helpers on the day.

Nazareth concludes the SUNY Poly Invitational with a match against the hosting Wildcats, tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 11. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. in Marcy, NY.
