Women's Lacrosse Closes Season with Loss in Semis

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Fourth-seeded Nazareth fell 22-4 at top-seeded St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 Conference women's semifinal lacrosse game on Thursday. Senior Sophia Scialdone finished with a goal and two assists to lead the Golden Flyers, which gave her 93 points (55 goals, 38 assists) on the season.

Nazareth closes the season at 11-8 overall. The Cardinals, ranked 16th in the IWLCA poll and sixth in the NCAA NPI, remains undefeated at 17-0 with the win.

After the Cardinals scored five consecutive goals in the first 5:50 of the opening quarter, the Golden Flyers tallied three of the final four goals of the quarter to cut their deficit to 6-3.

Senior Julia Dietz put Nazareth on the board with 8:17 to play in the first. It was her 23rd goal of the season. Graduate student Liddie Hoare started the scoring opportunity when she split a pair of defenders and flipped a pass to Scialdone, who was at goal line extended. Scialdone then passed to Dietz near the center of the crease, who found the back of the net.

About 45 seconds later, Fisher added its sixth goal. The Golden Flyers, however, answered in transition to bring them within four goals, 6-2, with 4:16 to play in the period. Dietz carried the ball through midfield and passed ahead to Scialdone. Scialdone passed to Emily Reichard for the goal, her 16th of the season.

Hoare scored Nazareth's third goal in the final minute of the first. Senior Grace Seither caused a Cardinals' turnover near midfield when she stuck out her stick to knock down the pass. Scialdone collected the ground ball and moved the ball to senior Makenna Misiurewicz, who had a two-on-one with Hoare. Misiurewicz passed to Hoare, who converted the scoring opportunity for her 44th goal of the year.

The Golden Flyers' best chance to score in the second came about two minutes into the quarter when Scialdone's free position shot hit the post. Fisher took control of the game in the second, outscoring the Nazareth 9-0 to claim a 15-3 lead at halftime.

Scialdone scored the Golden Flyers' fourth goal, 2:10 into the third quarter. After catching Misiurewicz's pass, Scialdone drove down the alley and buried her shot, which brought the score to 15-4. With her two assists, Misiurewicz surpassed 100 career points with 66 goals and 35 assists. She recorded 29 goals and 16 assists this year, which were both career highs.

The Cardinals recorded the last three goals of the third and four goals in the fourth for the 22-4 victory.

Junior Allie Klestinec tallied a game-high 10 saves, including five in the first. Klestinec finishes with 174 overall saves on the season to lead the Empire 8.
