ONEONTA, NY – The third-seeded Nazareth women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 semifinal match to No. 2 Geneseo on Friday in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Championship hosted at Wilbur Courts in Oneonta, NY. Nazareth came into the contest at 8-4 overall (5-3 Empire 8), while Geneseo was 8-2 (7-1 Empire 8). Early in the year, Nazareth fell to the Knights by a 7-0 margin to open conference play.
How it Happened:
- Geneseo took the point in doubles after winning first and second doubles
- Catherine Zak and Kenna Ellis stormed out to a 3-1 lead at first doubles, before Geneseo ripped off five-straight games to take the match
- Victoria Cioni and Anna Spencer were tied 2-2 and trailed 4-3 at second doubles, before dropping the final two games
- Isabella Iannitti and Paige Masrouri trailed 5-2 before the match was ended
- Cioni fell 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles, followed by Masrouri dropping fifth singles 6-2, 6-2 and Iannitti dropping sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0
- Zak had an unfinished first singles match, battling and dropping the first set 7-6 (7-5).
- Ellis trailed second singles 7-5 and Spencer third singles 6-5
Up Next:
Geneseo will take on top-seeded Hartwick on Saturday in the championship. Nazareth will be off until its spring portion of the schedule.
