New York City, NY – The strong play at the net for New York University led to a 3-0 loss for the Nazareth University Men's Volleyball team Saturday as the Golden Flyers wrapped up the regular season with the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) match in New York.
Nazareth (19-9 overall, 3-4 UVC) secured the No. 6 seed in the upcoming UVC Tournament and will face St. John Fisher in the first-round match at 7:30 p.m. April 11 at Vassar.
The Golden Flyers dropped the 3-0 match to NYU (16-7, 5-2 UVC) by set scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-20.
Nazareth could not take advantage of nine service errors by NYU in the opening set. The Golden Flyers led 15-14 but NYU went on an 8-1 run to open up a late lead of 22-16 as the Violets cruised to the win.
IN the second set, NYU broke open a close game after the score was tied at 9-9 and the Violets went on a 9-3 run to open a lead.
Nazareth rallied to trim the lead to 22-20 after a kill by senior Owen Wickens but NYU scored three of the last four points for the 2-0 lead in the match.
NYU took an early lead in the third set but rallied behind the serving of junior Alex Bertino to close the gap to 12-9 before NYU regained control and pushed the lead to 16-10 and took the final set for the 3-0 sweep.
Wickens led Nazareth with 12 kills, junior Josh Weaver had six kills and a team-leading 9 digs while sophomore AJ Burda led the Golden Flyers with 19 assists and added seven digs.
The NYU advantage came at the net with 30 team kills and 22 blocks.
