Women's Soccer Advances Past No. 1 Brockport in Pks; Flyers to Take on Geneseo in E8 Title Game

Nazareth was victorious 7-6 in penalty kicks

BROCKPORT, NY – Goalkeeper Delaney Malone saved the eighth penalty kick and Lauryn Obey sealed the win on the final PK to help No. 4 Nazareth advance past No. 1 Brockport in the Empire 8 Semifinals on Wednesday. Nazareth will travel to No. 2 Geneseo on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the Empire 8 Championship after the Knights downed Fisher 2-0 in the other semifinal. The Golden Flyers will be looking for their fourth-straight Empire 8 title and a berth to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.

Nazareth is now 11-5-3 overall, while Brockport falls to 15-1-2.

After falling 5-0 during the regular season to the Golden Eagles, the Nazareth squad was out with something to prove on Wednesday.

Following a scoreless regulation and overtime, the contest headed to penalty kicks.

Malone was strategically entered into the net for penalty kicks after Annika Monfort played the entire game.

Brockport opened up with a goal, before Grace Palczewski converted. A make by Brockport on the next attempt and a miss by Nazareth put the Golden Eagles in the driver seat. The top-seed notched each of their first four kicks, while Nazareth's Tatum Overton and Haley Dennison made good on their attempts to make the score 4-3 heading into the fifth round of kicks.

Brockport's fifth kick went high to breathe life into Nazareth's team and Shannon Sgombick made her attempt to send the game to extra kicks.

The teams traded goals on the sixth and seventh kicks with Kiyomi Mastro and Camryn Schiavitti banging in their attempts.

That set up the dramatic eighth round with Brockport's shot to Malone's right being saved on the ground. Obey was up for the pressure-packed shot, nailing a bar-down attempt to seal the victory.

The first half was very even with each team generating three shots and three corner kicks. In the 17th minute Nazareth had a decent opportunity off a corner kick, but Palczewski's shot was blocked.

Brockport picked up its level in the second half, generating seven corner kicks but the Nazareth defense and Monfort were up for the task. Monfort made four saves in the second half and one in overtime to push her career shutout total to 34.

Nazareth will looks to avenge a 2-0 loss to Geneseo during the regular season.
