ROCHESTER, NY –
Jake Pawlika and
Joey Weaver scored second half goals to lift men's soccer to a 2-1, come-from-behind victory, over SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday afternoon at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Nazareth now sits atop the Empire 8 standings with 17 points at 5-0-2 and 8-2-3 overall. Geneseo, who was previously unbeaten in conference play is now 4-1-2 in league play and 6-3-4 overall.
The Knights got on the board first in the 35
th minute on a perfectly placed shot from Alfonso Vito to beat goalkeeper
Logan Menna. He finished the game with six saves.
It was 1-0 at the half.
Nazareth upped its level in the second half and it paid off with two goals. A long throw by
Sam Romanosky was headed down by a Geneseo defender and immediately volleyed by Pawlika from 22-yards out into the top corner to tie the game in the 52
nd minute. Pawlika now has seven goals on the season.
Later in the game,
Drew Decker had a great individual effort to beat some Geneseo defenders, eventually having a ball leak through to Weaver for a goal in tight from 8-yards out in the 75
th minute. It was Weaver's second goal of the season. Nazareth leads the Empire 8 with 14 goals in seven conference matches.
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday, hosting Utica at 1 p.m.
