KEUKA PARK, NY – Junior Lydia Coombs scored late in the fourth quarter to bring the Nazareth University Field Hockey team to within a goal of tying the score, but Keuka rallied to score a goal in the final minute to earn a 4-2 victory Friday night in the first Empire 8 game of the season for the Golden Flyers.
After Nazareth (0-6 overall, 0-1 E8) controlled a majority of the play in the opening quarter, Keuka (2-4 overall, 1-1 E8) took a 1-0 lead with a goal early in the second period on a scramble for a loose ball in front of the Golden Flyer goal.
Just 1:12 into the second half, the Wolves extended the lead to 2-0 with another goal from jusy in front of the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Nazareth rallied and scored after a penalty corner as Madison Chodkowski netted her second goal of the season to cut the lead in half.
The score remained 2-1 until midway through the fourth quarter when Keuka was awarded a penalty stroke and scored with a shot to the left side of the cage for the 3-1 lead.
Coombs scored on a rebound with 2:23 left in the quarter to trim the lead and give the momentum to the Golden Flyers.
After another Nazareth penalty corner less than a minute later, Keuka regained possession and moved quickly up the field and scored on a short shot to take the 4-2 lead and held on for the closing seconds for the conference win.
Nazareth held a slim 20-17 edge in shots including a 13-9 edge in shots on goal as the Keuka goalie was forced to stop 11 shots for the win. Sophomore Madilyn Satter made five saves for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers return to non-conference action with a 7 p.m. home game against Rochester Wednesday night.
