ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Ninety minutes wasn't enough to decide Wednesday's non-conference women's soccer match between host Nazareth and Geneseo.
The teams battled to a 0-0 draw in a hard-fought and well played game at Golden Flyer Stadium. Nazareth's record is 1-2-2 with one more non-conference match before the Golden Flyers start Empire 8 Conference play. They travel to Ithaca Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Geneseo dropped to 3-1-1 overall.
The visiting Knights had a 23-14 edge in shots and probably the two best scoring chances as Abby Foster and Lindsey Matthews each caromed shots off the crossbar -- Foster in the first half and Matthews in the second. Nazareth, however, received solid play from defenders
Grace Palczewski,
Adison Fike,
Alice O'Connor and
Lauryn Obey among others to keep the game scoreless in front of keeper
Annika Monfort, whose four saves all came in the second half.
Nazareth had scoring chances as well. The best came in the second half when a free kick off the foot of
Makaelynn Neivel was steered over the crossbar by Geneseo keeper Mollie Collins, who was credited with six saves.
The game marked the last time that the teams will meet in a non-conference setting as Geneseo and Brockport will be members of the Empire 8 in 2024. Geneseo had won the three previous meetings with Nazareth, although the Golden Flyers lead the overall series 15-13-3.
